News And Updates :: SUMMER FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE UPDATE

Last newsletter we announced our summer fundraising campaign with a goal of raising $10,000 that will go towards our ongoing organizational needs, such as archival supplies, cataloging efforts, publishing costs, and more.

So far with the generosity of supporters, we've raised $1650 towards our goal! It's a great start, but we need everyone that can to step up and help us cross the finish line successfully! To sweeten the deal, if we make our goal of reaching at least $10,000, everyone who contributes will be sure to get one of the very first copies of our forthcoming publication, Frank Lloyd Wright's Two Jacobs Houses: Experiments in Modern Living, edited and with new essay by Wright scholar and noted author, Neil Levine. There are also additional essay contributions by all three Jacobs children (Susan, Elizabeth, and William) and historian Michael Desmond. It's set to be the definitive publication on the history and experience of living in these icons of American architecture.

So don't let this fail! Please make a tax-deductible donation of $100, $250, $500, $1000 or more at our website here and thanks!

From The Archives

Oftentimes, stories about past collections of archival materials are not positive ones. We hear about collections that have been destroyed, lost, carved up, or sold off to inaccessible parts unknown.

We're happy to report that we have a happy story! The extensive body of work by Architect and Taliesin Fellow Charles "Lath" Schiffner was thought to have been destroyed many years ago—a loss that made the process of learning about his unique contribution to organic architecture difficult if not impossible to study and appreciate. In a an almost miraculous turn of good luck, we recently learned that the collection once thought lost was actually discovered intact at a blueprint office in storage and is now safely in the OA+D Archives collections.

This wonderful news means that we can now organize, identify, digitize, and preserve the materials for future study and appreciation. OA+D is also in the process of producing a publication on the life and work of Charles Schiffner and these newly discovered materials will allow us to do so in a more comprehensive way. More on that project as it develops!

If you have organic architectural or design materials that you're interested in donating to be preserved, please let us know by contacting us at info@oadarchives.org.

AUTUMN JOURNAL OA+D COMING SOON :: COMING SOON

The Autumn 2022 issue of the Journal OA+D is currently in production and will be printing very soon. The full-color issue will feature one of architect Arthur Dyson's most exceptional works, The Hilton Residence.

Working under the auspices of three major figures of American Architecture — Frank Lloyd Wright, William Gray Purcell, and Bruce Goff — and across more than five decades of professional practice, Art Dyson has remained unswervingly committed to the belief that architectural design is one of the most potently enduring means to improve the quality of human experience. Since establishing his private practice in 1969 and in 1992 a partnership to support larger commercial and institutional commissions, Art has produced designs for private residences at all scales, diverse religious structures, K-12 educational campuses, multiple public libraries, health care and social service centers, hotels, corporate offices, performing arts centers and other cultural venues, and public transportation hubs.

One of the most compelling of his many designs is the seaside residence he created for Charles and Lela Hilton in Alys Bach, Florida (completed 2001). The design solution for this large private residence is rooted in the desire of the client for strong statement in creative architectural form and the demanding conditions of the site. In both business and personal focus, the life patterns of the client are deeply enveloped by the ambience of the Florida seashore, and everything in their program emphasized fluidity of movement.

With an essay by author and historian Mark Hammons, the issue will feature an abundance of stunning color photos by David Swann that detail this exceptional work of organic architecture inside and out.

This issue will be mailing out to subscribers by the end of August/beginning of September. If your subscription has lapsed be sure to renew to make sure you get one of the first copies available. More info here.
