'Tis The Season For Giving Some Great Gifts
Although you may still be Trick-or-Treating when this newsletter hits your email inbox, the holidays will be upon us in the blink of an eye. If you want to get your shopping done a little early this year AND help out a good cause in the process, then be sure to check out all of the amazing publications available at the OA+D web store.
Here's just a few that would be perfect for the architecture and design aficionado on your list:
Crossing Boundaries with Frank Lloyd Wright: How Ornament led to Architecture by Sidney K. Robinson traces how Wright extrapolated the principles that structured Sullivan’s ornament to the design of a whole building. Author Sidney K. Robinson proposes that the graphic pattern Wright used in "An Autobiography" is a diagram of an architect crossing between building and nature, between asserting and questioning. Following this pattern, Wright came to see ornament from the perspective of architecture and architecture from the perspective of ornament. That is how ornament can lead to architecture.
At Home: A Client's Appreciation For Authentic Architecture by Deborah Lencioni Lapp tells the story of her life in the houses she's called home, and in so doing, demonstrates the importance of architecture in our everyday lives. Having worked closely with renowned architect Arthur Dyson on her first home, the award-winning Lencioni Residence, Lapp returns to Dyson decades later to create a new home — the award-winning Lapp RiverHouse — for the next phase in her life. From the planning stages to soliciting bids from contractors to the challenges and joys of construction, Lapp lays out in specific, eye-opening, and sometimes humorous detail, how a client-architect collaboration can and should work. In an age of cookie-cutter McMansions, Lapp shows us that a nourishing, energizing, and embracing home that reflects your authentic self is not only possible, it makes all the difference.
Frank Lloyd Wright's Jacobs Houses: Experiments in Modern Living is the newest and most comprehensive book on two of Wright's most iconic residential designs. Edited by Frank Lloyd Wright scholar and noted author Neil Levine and features essay contributions by all three Jacobs children (Susan, Elizabeth, and William), as well as new scholarly essays by Levine and Michael Desmond. Additionally, the book includes new biographies of Katherine and Herbert Jacobs, as well as scores of never-before-published photographs and drawings of both Jacobs Houses. It's the most definitive publication on the history and experience of living in these icons of American architecture.
Three Imperial Hotel publications guest edited by Kathryn Smith — noted architectural historian and the preeminent expert on Wright's lost hotel. The first publication is Journal OA+D V6N3 on the history of the Hotel being built and the first-time publication in the US of a rare 1923 photographic portfolio. The second is Journal OA+D V11N2 that explored the years beyond 1923 with "100 Objects For 100 Years," as selected from the vast amount of material held in the OA+D Archives collections. Finally the third is the commemorative limited edition publication of a rare 1923 pamphlet on the Hotel with a new Introduction by Kathryn Smith titled *Jewel of the Orient: The Imperial Hotel."
You can feel extra good about purchases made because they directly benefit the work OA+D does preserving archival materials, making them accessible to the public, and supporting new research and appreciation of organic architecture and design through publications, exhibits, and more. Thanks for your support and Happy Holidays!

From The Archives
Throughout this anniversary year we've been featuring some of the hundreds of items OA+D is fortunate enough to have in its collections that are connected to Frank Lloyd Wright's Imperial Hotel.
This month we feature two exciting additions to the Imperial Hotel materials held in the collections of OA+D: Two rare examples of decorative terracotta tiles originally found in the Hotel. Both feature elaborate mutli-level geometric design elements, with areas pierced through so that a screening effect or passage of light can occur. Even in these individual elements Frank Lloyd Wright's mastery of manipulating the layering of depth, geometry, and space at the Imperial Hotel can be seen.
If you have materials that are related to the Imperial Hotel (or any other organic architectural or design items) that you're interested in donating to join our growing collections, please let us know by contacting us at info@oadarchives.org.
